Healing in our home.

When our daughter, who is now three was born, we had so much to learn. Looking back at how much has changed in the context of healing since then is incredible. When Addyson would get the slightest fever, we could call the doctor and give her Tylenol. That's what everyone does, right?

Well, in the three years, I have discovered, researched, and discussed a lot. I have learned so much and believe that although there is a time and place for the healing abilities of medicine, it is not everyday as many Americans (like me 3 years ago) use it. Modern medicine has side effects. Our bodies are our temples. Too long did I dump this and that in my body and have had health consequences as a result.

I don't want that for my kids.

I think the base to a healthy life is our food. Water, whole ORGANIC foods free from GMO's, and sunshine. God knew what he was doing when he created this earth and made Adam and Eve. We have fallen away from the natural gifts and healing that the Lord gave us. My goal is to get back to that as close as possible. One of the healing gifts that he gave us were essential oils. The Bible references oils, aromatics, incense and ointments over 200 times! In Exodus, the Lord gave Moses a recipe containing Myrrh, cinnamon, Calamus, Cassia, and Olive oil for holy anointing. The anointing of Jesus as referred to in John 12:3 was done with ointment of Spikenard. And let's not forget Frankincense an Myrrh were gifts given to baby Jesus. Records of essential oil use date back thousands of years for religious rituals and medicinal application. Many hieroglyphics depict the use of essential oils and describe numerous oil recipes. The Romans purified their temples and political buildings by diffusing essential oils and also used aromatics in their steam baths to invigorate themselves and ward off disease.

You may be wondering how oils can heal. Let me first explain what they are. An essential oil is the aromatic, volatile liquid that is within many shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds and extracted by steam distillation. Essential oils are often visible when a plant is cut or bruised, the resin oozes out and seals and protects the cut or bruise. Essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs. They are different from vegetable oils. A single oil may contain anywhere from 80 to 300 or more different chemical constituents. They can be extracted or distilled many different ways that will have a dramatic effect on their chemistry and medicinal action. They can be ingested, applied topically, or inhaled.

Now that you know what they are, how do I use them? Most of the oils have extraordinary capability to be antiseptic, anti-tumoral, anti-fungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-parasitic, antiviral, and anti-infectious. Essential oils are catalysts. They are lipid soluble and can immediately penetrate the cell wall to bring oxygen and nutrients into the cell. Jean Claude Lapraz, MD made the statement that essential oils may have the potential to increase cellular oxygen by 21%. Independent laboratory studies showed that hydrogen peroxide had an oxygen potential to increase by 9.5%. Essential oils carry oxygen, ozone and negative ions. No other other component of a plant comes close! So really the question is how can't I use them?? I use oils for cuts and scrapes, bruises, to prevent sickness and promote healing, stop headaches... The list goes on!

Not only can I apply oils to specific spots to promote physical healing in and on the body, Inhaling them produces therapeutic benefits. Oils have helped people overcome depression, anxiety, ADD and more. When a fragrance is inhaled, the odor molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped. Each odor molecule fits like a little puzzle piece into specific receptor cell sites. The olfactory membranes transmit it to the limbic brain, including the amygdala, which stores emotion. The limbic system is also directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone imbalance.

We diffuse oils in the morning to help us wake up, at night to help us calm down and sleep, during homeshooling to help concentrate, and throughout the day to kills germs. When we have a bug bite, I grab an oil. A boo boo, oil. Headache (which I rarely get with a cleaner diet and proper water consumption), oil. They are an everyday part of my life and have transformed how we do our day to day. Oils are now packed in the diaper bag for myself and the kids. I put them in cooking and drinking water.

I am far from an all knowing oil guru. But, I truly love learning about them and how they can help my family and those I know. The most important thing to know is that not all oils are created equal. There are MANY companies out there that claim to have the best quality and this had led to many burns and bad reactions. After a lot of research and reading, I chose Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils. They are the gold standard in essential oils and the only oil I will use for my family. I only recommend using these and not all other oils are safe for ingestion as these. To order, go here. Why Young Living? Keep an eye out for my next post to answer that question.Disclaimer: I am not a licensed health practitioner. How about you? Have you ever heard of or used essential oils? Testimonies? Please share them with me!

  1. Hi there. Haven't used oils very much, but I did use spikenard on my children on the first day of school this year. It was more spiritual than anything. I would like to explore it more, but have no idea which oils to use for what. When the kids come home from school at 4 every day, everything gets crazy for that hour. I would like to create a peaceful environment for them to enter each day at 4:00 and hopefully minimize the craziness. Any thoughts?

  2. Anna, I am so excited that you are interested in oils! They have transformed our life and home and it feels great to take charge of our health and mood using Gods tools provided to us. For a calming effect, I LOVE Peace and calming and lavender. Lavender also has many medicinal properties that helped it gain its nickname of first aid kit! They are both always in our diaper bag and I love to diffuse them to help wind down and create a more peaceful environment. I can't wait to help you along your journey of discovering oils!
